Yahoo announced just last month that it was acquiring Summly, an application that provided short summaries of news stories that was developed by a 15-year old. On Monday the company released a brand new application that includes Summly built-in.
The application looks barebones on the surface, but if you visit the settings menu you can activate a “visual” option that places full images behind the text of each story. As you scroll down through the various news stories the images change to reflect the content that you’re reading. If you click any article summary you’re almost instantly brought to the full text of the article, which appears on a plain white background. It’s a visually pleasing experience, the summary part at least, although we have to admit we’re still more partial to the incredible design of Yahoo’s new weather application.
The new Yahoo also lets you divide news into various topics, including entertainment stories, sports, business, technology and science. You can also log into your Yahoo account to set specific topic preferences or search Yahoo directly from the application itself. The update is free and is available from the iTunes App Store now.
